SURF Program Description:
The SURF Program provides an opportunity for the NIST laboratories to encourage outstanding undergraduate students to pursue careers in science and engineering. The objective of the SURF Program is to build a mutually beneficial relationship among the student, the academic institution, and NIST.
9-11 week programs
Participating student must be enrolled full-time in an academic program.
Be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident
Commit to eleven (11) full continuous weeks, or nine (9) full continuous weeks for the nine (9) week program, (Monday through Friday) from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., during the summer of 2017, to participate in the SURF Program. Students are expected to participate in SURF Boulder and SURF Gaithersburg through the last day of the program, August 4, 2017.
Be a currently registered undergraduate at the applicant university or college in the U.S. or its territories with a scientific major at the time of application. Graduating seniors may apply for the program but must be a registered undergraduate at the time of application.
Is considering pursuing a graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.). Students with biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, materials science, mathematics, nanoscale science, neutron research and/or physics majors are always encouraged to apply. There may also be research opportunities for students with other majors. Refer to the evaluation criteria and selection factors for additional recommendations.
A grade point average of 3.0/4.0 or better is recommended.
2017 UCLA Summer Research Program in Beijing & Shanghai, China Description:
Twelve-week program where UCLA students will participate in advanced research in science or engineering while gaining valuable international experience during the summer period.
Throughout the week, students take Chinese language and cultural classes.
On weekends and evenings, students have the opportunity to go sightseeing in and around Beijing.
June 19 - July 2, 2017
Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China for intensive Chinese language and cultural courses
July 3 - September 8, 2017
Peking University, Beijing, China for 10-week Summer Research Program
Estimated total expense is $4 - 5,000 for the 10-week program. Expenses include airfare, lodging, food, local transportation, and small incidentals (such as text books or gym membership). All costs, except housing, are at individual discretion.
UCLA students in the sciences, engineering, and health sciences.
2nd, 3rd or 4th year at the time of applying

Applicants must have demonstrated experience performing research in a laboratory at UCLA.
Commitment to spending two weeks at SJTU and ten weeks at Peking University during summer 2017.
