Design Team

BMES’s design team is a year-long program where students work in a team to learn and apply bioengineering design principles in a design project. Over the course of a year, students will apply technical skills, such as coding, circuitry, 3D Computer Aided Design, Printed Circuit Board design, etc., to develop and engineer a novel solution to meet a biomedical need. Ideally, students should have some prior technical experience coming in.

2022-2023 Projects

Stabilometric Console

The Stabilometric Console Project aims to develop a rehabilitory stabilometric platform paired with interactive games to improve and measure balance in elderly patients. This would be able to aid in areas such as fall prevention while creating a fun environment for rehabilitation. With more development, this project has the potential to expand to wider audiences such as neurological or orthopedic patients, however, due to time constraints the project focuses on elderly fall prevention tactics.

Smart Knee Brace

The Smart Knee Brace project aims to measure knee flexion and extension using Bluetooth-connected sensors. Coupled with an app, this sensor data will help providers diagnose knee pathologies and/or walk patients through rehabilitation exercises.

Adaptive FootSole

Our project is aiming to detect problems such as over/underpronation, achilles issues, and more dynamically by utilizing pressure sensors in a 3d printed sole. We have a sensor layout that goes over the existing footsole in the shoe, which routes to a PCB and bluetooth module that connects to a mobile app. In this mobile app, you are able to see past data of the sensors in graphs, where it can be seen if certain parts of the foot are favored, such as if you are putting too much weight on your toe during physical activity.
