Tuesday 06 May 2008 PLEASE VOTE - BE T-Shirt Design
Thank you for your active and enthusiastic participation in the T-shirt contest. We received over 30 T-shirt designs and were impressed by many of them!!! It is now YOUR chance to choose the design that YOU will want to wear. Therefore, I strongly encourage all of you to participate in the upcoming voting process. Every BE student, grad or undergrad will be able to cast 3 votes on his or her favorite T-shirt designs in order of preference. The 1st rank design will receive 3 points; the 2nd rank design will receive 2 points, and the 3rd rank design will receive 1 point. Please go to here in order for you to view all of the submissions and cast your vote. The pdf file is rather large, so I recommend you download it to your hard drive before viewing it. You must use your official UCLA email address to submit your vote. Email verification will be sent to that address. Non-UCLA email address and non-BE student email address submission will not be counted. The voting process will begin on Tuesday 05/06/08 and end on Thursday (05/08/08) at 5pm. Depending on the outcome of the voting process, we may hold another round of voting to choose the ultimate design. We are very excited about the coming of the ultimate BE T-shirt, and we hope that you are as well. Voting for Biomedical Engineering Society 2007-2008 Officers has started today! Below is the official list of candidates: President: Xun Gong Kunal Mehta Vice-President: Brian Hahn Aaron Meyer Treasurer: Brian Hahn Director of Corporate Outreach: Cecilia Chiu Director of Activities: Xuan Yue Historian: Robert Purnell Director of Information Technologies: Vu Nguyen Director of Academic Affairs and Internships: Edward Pham Here are are some statements from the candidates: Xun Gong, Presidential Candidate"I am probably known for acting like a dumb**s most of the time. However, those who are acquainted with me also know that I have not, and will not fail those who put their trust in me. As the secretary of BMES for the last two years, I have seen both productivity and stagnancy. I know BMES' needs, and am not afraid to take the steps required. It's easy to have meetings to make "plans," while splitting burdens on others to make it happen. It's one thing to make promises, without taking any responsibility. Some say that actions speak louder than words; I say results speak the loudest of them all. Vote for me and you will see the results. Vote for me, because I actually care. Vote for me, because I don't think of the presidency of BMES as just another line to put on my grad school application."Kunal Mehta, Presidential Candidate"I'm currently a third-year Bioengineering undergraduate student. Since the Fall of 2005 I have been the Director of Corporate Outreach for BMES. In this position I helped to organize the 2007 UCLA Science Expo vendor show, which was a great fundraising opportunity for our club and also a good way for grad students and faculty to meet vendors. As President, I'd like to build on the things we've done this year, centered around our quarterly social events and a strong Science Expo, and add a few new programs focused on increasing our interaction with our members and making BMES a club that really provides a valuable service to the BE/BME students. I'd like to work with Ed Pham to explore the possibility of bringing back the BMES paper competition (perhaps in the form of a poster competition+small scholarship) to increase the interaction we have with students and their research, as well as with the new Corporate Outreach director to see if we can bring more biotech companies on campus. Also to increase our outreach to our members, I'd like to try to have a number of activities throughout the year (e.g., karaoke, pool/bowling, etc.) that can be partially or fully subsidized by BMES and open to all members, with a view to getting the members more involved with and excited about all the things BMES does."Brian Hahn, Vice-Presidential Candidate"Hi, my name is Brian Hahn running for, once again, vice president and treasurer of the Biomedical Engineering Society. I am a third-year undergraduate in bioengineering. I have been a treasurer for BMES my second year, and over the year I learned a lot about the financial strategies of the club and how it operates. I feel my next goal is to be even closer to BMES by becoming its vice president. If there were one aspect that I would like to promote, it would be to have more activities for regular BMES members and encourage them to attend, so that the club's goal of social interaction is met. As vice president, I hope to continue to help the president and the board succeed in their pursuit of knowledge and promotion of social interaction. And as treasurer, I hope to be of further assistance to undertaking any fiscal challenges."Aaron Meyer, Vice-Presidential Candidate"I am a second year bioengineering undergraduate who has been committed to BMES during my first two college years as webmaster and treasurer. As vice-president, I aspire to make BMES a more efficient organization, and plan events of interest to the department's undergraduates. Therefore, I plan to coordinate an information session for interested undergraduates seeking lab positions, provide similar information on the organization's website, and ensure that existing events are as accessible to students as possible. BMES is an open organization, and as part of that idea I plan to see to it that all internal information is made available on the website. I believe my experience with BMES, as well as in the ESC Corps tutoring program and LOGIC as Director of Media and Design demonstrate that I have the initiative and experience to accomplish these goals, in addition to fulfilling the usual duties of my position."Cecilia Chiu, Director of Corporate Outreach Candidate"My name is Cecilia Chiu and I am a third year, bioengineering major. In my high school, I was the Associated Student Body Historian. I hope my experience from there will help me in being the Director of Corporate Outreach. Because I am not familiar with BMES, I will try my best to fulfill the duties of this position. I have spoken with current BMES officers about BMES and this position and I hope to do my best. If I am ever doing anything wrong, please tell me. I look forward to being an active member of BMES and I hope our year goes smoothly."Richard SamadeonTuesday, May 29, 2007 - 18:19:24 Comments are turned off for this item Monday 07 May 2007 Casino Night!
